So, my relative made an anti-war short which is pretty interesting, especially for those of you who have met him. He had gone to his Vietnam veteran reunion this past spring and afterwards taught a workshop on digital video editing. He was inspired by the conversations he had with the other veterans about Iraq and made this piece. It was meant as a teaching example, so was made pretty quickly. Please go see it!

An anti-war film by a Vietnam vet featuring the Islamic Morning Call to Prayer, taps, official US flag folding, jet engines, Abe Lincoln and a bit of patriotic blood.

Sad Week

No chance to post much this week. My grandmom’s sister passed away, so things have been busier. She was super awesome, always laughing, liked to watch the pony races, I’ve got some fun memories of Barbie-ing it up at her house as a kid. Her best loved quote, “My favorite pie is the one sitting in front of me.”

Grandmom was so sad. With her Alzheimer’s there aren’t many people who she consistently remembers, and her sister was a great ally against all us younger folks. Also, unfortunately with her Alzheimer’s we’re not sure if she’ll remember being told. Or, how many times she’ll have to go through hearing the news.

Yay! Two trips into town in one week!

Last ten ditties that have come up on my thing-that-is-not-an-ipod-because-I-am-cheap.

  1. Devo – Space Girl Blues
  2. Bablicon – Silicon Bucktown
  3. Brother Cleve – School 4 Robots
  4. Belle & Sebastian – The Eighth Station of the Cross Kebab House
  5. Psapp – Velvet Pony
  6. DMBQ – Ohh! Baby
  7. The “You Know Who” Group – My Love (Roses are Red)
  8. The Robot Ate Me – The Republican Party
  9. Dengue Fever – Ethanopium
  10. Polvo – Lazy Comet

Oh, and that Residents project is pretty interesting. I’ve only heard the first story, which wasn’t so exciting, but it was fun. The sound effects are great, very Residents. I’m looking forward to getting the rest of the tracks.

Listening to this reminds me of the Ruby: Adventures of a Galactic Gumshoe radio show that my friends and I listened to when I was a teen… THAT was a lot of fun. I highly recommend it.

OK…. the cover isn’t great. But the story is. I promise.

From the Android Sisters (recurring characters in the story):

“Do you watch the nightly news?
Do you watch it faithfully?
When the anchorman goes, blah, blah, blah,
Do you go bah, bah, bah?
And you ask us do androids dream of electric sheep?
Yes. We dream of you.”

Not having internet is crappy and missing a whole week of everybuddies’ blog is really annoying.

However, spending a week going to flea markets and buying lots of nifty stuff is excellent. I gots to take some pictures so I can show it all off! So far I have a great old desk, shelves, bed frame, some dishes from the 60’s, and Prince Albert in a can.

And I found a great place to live today.. although I can’t see it until I move out West. Had to make all the arrangements over the phone. Seems to be some sort of small one bedroom house across the street from campus and a Target. Oh hell yeah.

Check out my spiffy new bike! It’s sweet. Nice big hybrid wheels great for riding around the farm. It’s fun! Well, except for the bruises. Who knew pine trees were so dangerous. Those suckers come out of nowhere. Like ninjas.

In other news, I stopped acting like a 12 year-old and am now getting along with my family. Good for me.

I always forget how awesome swimming is, until I’m back here for the summer. So nice. That’s about all that’s going on. Other than trying to control my alternating inclinations to either hug or fatally throttle the women in my family. It’s amazing to me that my mother and her sister can be so different in personality (the former is easygoing, the latter is controlling) and yet be so equally annoying.

You’re 60 years old, you don’t have to sleep on the couch! The “but I just want everyone to be happy” line looses it’s effectiveness when you force everyone to have the same argument with you every friggin night. Oh, and is there any reason to do the dishes at 1am when you usually go to bed by 9? Other than to demonstrate how horrible your children are, of course. You’re all nuts!

All this fun reminds me of the great idea for a cooking show that La Blonde and I had a few years back. The setup would be a woman and her mother cooking ‘together’, i.e. trying to prepare a meal while bickering over miniscule details and pretending to like each other. We called it ‘The Passive Aggressive Chef’.

Or I would be very scared.

The Build A Bear. He has a very large needle. And there are two of them.

Ah, malls in the Midwest, how I never missed you.

I’m now in Misery. No internet unless someone kindly drives me into town. So I have about twenty blissful minutes to catch up.

Total Birthday Haul:

Bombay Sapphire Gin (thanks BH!)

Assorted Cocktail Books, another bottle of gin, some vodka, kahlua, and amaretto (from my cousin, Buccaneer Paul, and his Kat)

$100 from the Aunt

$100 from Dad

… Hm. Money and booze.

I think people know how to make me happy.

Pirate update: I made some totally kickin pirate themed kitchen accouterments for the aforementioned Buccaneer and their swingin new pad. Arrrrrgh!
